Parking There are secure, barrier-controlled parking areas at all strategic points around the reservoir. There is no charge for brief stays of up to 15 minutes, but it currently [January 2018] costs £1.50 per car for up to 1 hour or £3.50 for up to 3 hours at a single location. For those who wish to explore, a £6 tickets allows free movement to all Rutland Water car parks for the whole day. All main visitor centres are well signposted around the perimeter.
Tourist information The Rutland Water Visitor Centre is at Sykes Lane, off the A606 between Whitwell and Empingham. Here you will find books, maps, brochures and visitor information on the various activities available around the reservoir. There are refreshments available, a toilet block and play areas for the children. A safe wild-swimming area has also been created there, complete with a sandy beach. There is a designated dog walking area along the top of the dam and an enclosure where dogs may be let off the lead.
Watersports Rutland Watersports Centre is at Whitwell, offering sailing and windsurfing tuition, as well as sailing boats and kayaks for hire, along with all the associated clothing and equipment. There is also a free outdoor gym. The main trout fishing lodge is at Normanton.
Barnsdale Wood To the west of Whitwell, there is a car park next to an area of woodland renowned for its carpet of bluebells in the Spring.
Egleton Bay nature reserve Look out onto specially-created, shallow lagoons which provide the perfect habitat for a wide variety of water birds, especially waders and shallow-divers. The lightly wooded area behind the centre is good for spotting tree dwelling birds, especially woodpeckers.
Lyndon Visitor Centre This facility on the south shore is closest to the ospreys and has an indoor viewing area with a live television feed from cameras trained on the nests. There is a charge to venture out into the reserve.
